iPad Apps

Here is a list of iPad applications that was generated at the 2012 Montana Science Teachers Association conference in a session I lead.  Feel free to add to it.

What Apps do You Like?

• Heartbeat 3
• Chirp USA~for birding; hear bird calls with pictures of the birds
• Go Skywatch~ turns google maps into a planetarium; there’s a fee
• Hello Baby~ shows the progression of baby as it develops; real size available; what’s happening each week
• Science VL~glossary
• Rocks~ list of rocks with images of specimens and properties; you can set up a quiz
• Rocks and Gems
• HD Insects and Spiders~ several volumes with specific terms and taxonomy; heaps of material; good resource for students; good for identification of insects on a field trip
• Leaf Snap~ take a picture of trees and it is identified
• Periodic Table
• PBS Nova Elements~ has videos
• Total Recall~concept mapping; free; can be saved to the cloud; cannot label links
• ScreenChomp~scribe and recording app; choose a background image then choose a marker to write on the background; would be good to diagram and label a leaf;  students can record on their iPads the teacher’s voice as they copy diagram; recording and the diagram is then saved to the clouds; could be used for assessment pieces.
• Show Me~would do the same thing as ScreenChomp
• I Annotate~(used to teach teachers) pdf files; can write or type; very editable; $8-$10. Can be emailed to teacher, annotated, and emailed back to students.  Used a lot.
• Docs To Go~import and export all of the Windows products:  Excel, Word, etc.
• Key Note~create presentations to save on the computer; Question: How do you annotate the presentation once it’s created?
• Splash Desktop~on your computer and iPad; it mirrors; wireless connection to what’s on the computer; able to annotate what’s on the video. For when you need to be remote in the classroom.
• Square~a credit card reader program; need the devise; 2.7% charged per transaction
• Sound Note
• Record
• Pen Ultimate
• Photo Booth~good for taking pictures; and can be presented in many different ways: swirl,
• Too Noisy~face gets mad if the noise is too high; there’s one for a dollar that’s better; monitors sound level
• Text for Instigram~take a picture and then write names; could be used for seating charts.
• Microsoft Word~
• NASA Viz~asronomy; story lists; you can download stories in the evening to show to students during class; launch videos that accompany stories.
• NASA 3D Sun~current news and images from solar dynamics observatory
• Mahjong Chem~ tile games; students match the oxidation numbers with formula polytomic ions;
• Nova Elements~ free app; scroll through the periodic table
• Atom in a Box
• Gas Laws Light
• Splice~email pictures to each other to create animations, like protein synthesis;
• Face Time~ use to do a lecture series
• Vernier Video Physics~ use for Newton’s Laws; import video of rocket and it can frame by frame
• Poll Everywhere~ can instantly poll the class; will instantly display results to an app, like KeyNote
• Zite~ for current events, takes and scans every news article on the Internet, like technology, genetics.
• Science 360~ 360 view of images; short videos; chemistry applications on vegetable ripening; physics
• Webb MD
• Formulas Lite~ chemistry games, multiple choice, lots on compounds
• Notability
– Ipads are hard to share but this app allows students to lock their documents on the IPad, Students can share their IPads and their docs are password protected. Great for the paperless classroom. Great for taking notes in and brining in digital work to work on and save within the app. Students can also Dropbox or email docs to teacher from here. • • Numbers– From Apple. Great for keeping data and making graphs.
• Air Server
– Actually an app for mac. Does same thing as Splashtop but works MUCH better. Real time mirroring. Hook up computer to overhead and walk around with IPad.  $14.99
• Web site:  Socrative.com use for quizzes. You put in questions and scores are tallied and sent as an excel file. Kids takequizzes on Ipad
• Launchball
– London science museum. Problem solving game. Kids love it for free time. Great game.
• Graphic Analysis for the iPad (Vernier product)
• Probeware (Vernier product):  Graphic analysis
• Lab Quest 2~blue tooth to computer (Lab Quest Viewer) allows you to view on your computer.  Once it’s paired, it will recognize one unit.  Different features can be built into the probe: sensors
